LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD) – Back-to-school shopping is putting financial pressure on families, and local retailers say they are working to help ease the cost.
Kevin Matus, store manager at Walmart on MSF and Ave. Q, said the season creates stress for many households.
“Back to school is a very stressful time for parents,” Matus said. “They’re having to reset from summer. They’re trying to get back in routine.”
Target and Walmart say their prices on essential items are at an all-time low. Target Canyon West Store Director Rachel Karr said the store ran a week-long savings event to help shoppers.
“Target loves to help guests save and so we’re providing a week-long shopping experience from July 26th through August 1st to help our guests save and value,” Karr said.
Online vs. in-store pricing
A comparison of in-store and online pricing at Walmart found that the same basket of classroom essentials cost less when purchased online.
Many stores offer app-exclusive discounts, but shoppers do not have to buy online to get the lower price. Walmart and Target will price-match their own online and app pricing if customers ask at the register.
Additional savings tips
Experts with Navy Federal Credit Union recommend shoppers “shop your home first” to reuse leftover binders and pens from previous years, and to stick to a list to avoid impulse purchases.
Matus said customers are actively seeking deals.
“All the customers are looking for savings right now,” Matus said. “So they’re looking for everyday low price and rollbacks within the store. So there’s a lot that goes on with it and we’re trying to make it as simple as possible for them here at the store.”
Texas Tax-Free Weekend ahead
Karr noted that Texas Tax-Free Weekend is also approaching, offering another opportunity for shoppers to save.
“And with that next weekend as well as Texas Tax-Free Weekend and so adding more value for our guests that come to shop with us,” Karr said.
