More heat today, storm chances return Friday

  • July 30, 2026

LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD) – A Heat Advisory remains in effect from 1 p.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday for most areas off the Caprock, where hot temperatures are expected to reach 106 degrees.

KCBDKCBD(KCBD)What to expect Thursday

Thursday will be mostly dry across the region, with a slim chance for rain for areas off to the northwest. Friona, Dimmitt and surrounding areas could see an isolated thunderstorm or two late Thursday evening. Any storms that develop Thursday evening could bring gusty winds, so keep an eye on the sky as the sun sets.

High temperatures will reach near 100 degrees on the Caprock and up to 106° off the Caprock.

Rain chances increase Friday

The pattern changes Friday as a weak front moves through the region. Scattered showers and thunderstorms are expected to develop as early as Friday morning and then may continue into the afternoon and evening, with the greatest storm chances along and west of the I-27 corridor. Across the Caprock 40-60% rain chances are expected.

When storms do develop, be prepared for locally heavy rainfall and gusty winds. These storms could impact your Friday afternoon and evening plans, so stay weather aware.

Triple-digit heat continues Friday as well, though conditions will begin to moderate slightly heading into the weekend.

Weekend outlook and beyond

Storm chances may linger into Saturday, especially across the northwest South Plains and other areas on the Caprock.

KCBDKCBD(KCBD)

Slightly cooler temperatures are expected this weekend, which will be a welcome break from the heat. However, hot temperatures above 100 degrees are expected to return early next week as high pressure rebuilds over the region.

KCBDKCBD(KCBD)Staying safe

Limit outdoor activities during the Heat Advisory from 1 p.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday. Drink plenty of water and check on vulnerable family members and pets. Have a plan for Friday afternoon storms, as this rainfall may linger into Saturday morning.
