Missing the world cup? We’ve got one final way you can keep those memories alive.
The University of Texas at Arlington is asking people to submit their best world cup photos and videos to them for a new special digital collection that will preserve the historic moments here in our host city.
This week, UTA Libraries said it had about 20 submissions. They’re hoping to get at least 50, but say they will take as many as they get.
Brett Lawson, from England, who attended his team’s match at Dallas Stadium, was one of the first to submit his memories.
“It was the first World Cup we’d ever been to,” Lawson said. “I loved being able to go to the game with my son, and a friend of mine sent me the link to post something, and I thought I’d love to share that moment.”
UTA Libraries opened a World Cup Exhibit to campus during the World Cup, and now it is doing this to forever document the moments experienced by the community and fans from around the world.
Kathryn Slover is now organizing photos and videos for their new special online collection you’ll be able to access anywhere. People who create submissions are encouraged to tell a short story about their memories that will also be included for everyone to see.
“We wanted to really document the community’s experience,” Slover said.
That’s experiences big or small.
“Whether it was AT&T stadium being redone or,your local watch party…[or if you] happened to spot Erling Haaland in Fort Worth at the stockyards trying on a cowboy hat,” Slover said with a laugh.
There really are no limits to the historic record reflecting a time of unity and just pure happiness.
“And I think that’s the point,” Lawson said. “Seeing that camaraderie of all the people, how everybody came together. And this is a great opportunity to once more come together.”
UTA Libraries has done special collections for other major events in North Texas, like when the Texas Rangers won the World Series and the Total Solar Eclipse.
