Texas track and field’s long distance roster got a little faster Wednesday with the signing of Kenyan distance runner Dennis Kipkemoi Kipkogei.
Kipkogei, who will turn 25 on Aug. 7, arrives at the Forty Acres with personal-best times that immediately place him among the contenders for the NCAA cross country national title. The team announced the signing on social media.
The Kenyan recorded a standout performance at the Berlin Half Marathon in March 2026. Originally running as a pacemaker, he finished second with 59 minutes, 11 seconds.
His time was six seconds faster than American Conner Mantz’s record-eligible national mark of 59:17, set at the 2025 Houston Half Marathon.
Kipkogei later demonstrated that his Berlin performance was not a one-off. He won the Gutenberg Half Marathon in Mainz, Germany, with 59:14 in May 2026, breaking the course record and finishing more than a minute ahead of the runner-up.
“I came here to break the course record and I am happy that I managed it,” Kipkogei said in a Gutenberg Half Marathon Mainz race report by RunOhio.
Kipkogei then moved to the track in June and won The Lightning 10.000 in Stadtallendorf, Germany, with a personal best time of 27:25.70.
Kipkogei’s signing could help kick-start a Texas men’s cross-country team that has fallen shy of qualifying for the NCAA Championships as a team two years in a row.
While road and track performances do not always translate directly to cross country courses, Kipkogei’s 10,000-meter speed gives Texas a runner capable of competing near the front of the NCAA field.
