A new trade deadline rumor suggests the Houston Astros are seriously considering a reunion with a former star to address their need for an impact right-handed bat.
For weeks, the speculation around MLB is that the Astros would eventually decide to be sellers before Monday’s MLB trade deadline. However, management has continued to maintain that they still believe they can be a playoff team in 2026.
While they would be a serious long shot to go far in the postseason, the front office isn’t wrong about their playoff chances. They are only a game out of the final Wild Card spot in the American League, and most importantly, a lone game behind the Texas Rangers for first place in the AL West. If they can build a little momentum the ‘Stros can absolutely reach the playoffs this fall.
But to build that momentum, one of the things the organization believes it needs is another valuable right-handed bat. While they have been linked to several players ahead of the Aug. 3 trade deadline, a new report from ESPN will catch some Houston fans by surprise.

Six years ago, Springer ended a memorable run in Houston to accept a massive six-year, $150 million deal from the Toronto Blue Jays in free agency. While he has been good for the Jays, he hasn’t reached the same heights he did with the Astros when he went to the All-Star Game three times and played a key role in their 2017 World Series win.
According to ESPN, “Toronto is currently in offload mode,” and they don’t want to pay what’s left on the final year of Springer’s contract. Although he is 37 and in an obvious age-related decline, who doesn’t love a reunion with a team great? Plus, if the four-time All-Star disappoints, he comes off the books after this season.
The outlet notes there are obvious hurdles to a deal. Yordan Alvarez has the DH spot locked down, and Springer has only played in the outfield for seven innings in 2026. He would have to play left for the Astros. But he knows the field as well as anyone, and that side of the outfield being smaller than most ballparks is beneficial at this point in his career. So it may not be too much of an adventure for him.
Mattering on the price, Springer could create a feel-good story in the second half of the season while being the impact bat — with no contractual strings attached — that Houston could use.
