A third-generation Texas peace officer, Ivey has served with the Texas Tech Police
Department in various roles since joining the department in 2012.

Texas Tech University has named Interim Chief of Police Amy Ivey as the new chief of the Texas Tech Police Department, effective Aug. 1.
Ivey, who joined the department in 2012 after graduating from the South Plains College
Police Academy, has served as Assistant Chief of Police since September 2025 and was
named interim chief in December after the retirement of Kyle Bonath.
“I am honored and excited to serve as the next Chief of Police for the Texas Tech
Police Department,” Ivey said. “Having begun my law enforcement career at Texas Tech,
it is especially meaningful to be able to lead this outstanding department. I look
forward to working alongside our dedicated officers, dispatchers, security personnel,
administrative staff and our faculty, staff and students across all Texas Tech campuses.
Together, we will continue building on our strong foundation by embracing community
policing and remaining steadfast in our commitment to serving and protecting our campus
communities with integrity, professionalism and transparency.”

A third-generation peace officer, Ivey earned her bachelor’s degree from West Texas
A&M in 2011 before entering the South Plains Police Academy. She quickly rose through
the ranks of the Texas Tech Police Department, achieving the rank of captain in 2021.
“Chief Ivey has demonstrated leadership throughout her career at Texas Tech. She has
earned the trust and respect of our campus community and is deeply committed to its
safety and well-being,” said Texas Tech President Lawrence Schovanec. “She will further the mutually beneficial relationship between our police department
and those that it serves.”
In her time with Texas Tech, Ivey has helped deliver crime prevention and community
safety programs, organized and conducted training programs for both officers and external
partners, and led numerous operational areas within the department.
“Chief Ivey has spent her career protecting our campus communities and cares deeply
about the people we serve,” Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center President Lori Rice-Spearman said. “I am confident she will lead with integrity and continue to make our campuses
safe and welcoming for everyone.”
As assistant chief, she was responsible for the daily operation of numerous divisions
within the department. She has developed a consistent record of leadership and relationship
building across campus and throughout West Texas. She is committed to creating a safe
and secure environment for students, faculty and staff to be able to live, learn and
educate.
“Chief Ivey’s 14-year history of leadership at the Texas Tech Police Department, paired
with her vision for increased collaboration and educational policing, will lead both
the department and the university forward as we continue to grow,” said Noel Sloan, CFO and Senior Vice President of Administration & Finance. “As a part of our Red Raider family, Chief Ivey has already made a significant impact
on the safety and security of our campus, and her goals for the department will continue
to make Texas Tech a safe place for our students, faculty, staff and community for
years to come.”
Representatives from Texas Tech, the Texas Tech University System and the Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center served on the committee to find
a new police chief.
