EL PASO, TEXAS (KFOX14/CBS4) — Breast cancer patients in El Paso got a confidence boost on Friday as El Paso Community College hosted its annual “Power of Pink” event, offering free makeovers, portraits and gifts.
For more than 20 years, EPCC has partnered with local hospitals and health providers to invite patients to the EPCC Cosmetology Department for the event.
Organizers said the goal is to help patients rebuild self-confidence after intense treatments that can affect how they feel about their bodies.
“Whatever they’re going through, surgery, they tend to have issues, body image issues, so having them get their makeover, get their picture done, they get little gifts, they leave here glowing,” Charlie Swopes, service line administrator for oncology, told KFOX14/CBS4 on Friday.
Power of Pink is a community initiative in El Paso dedicated to celebrating the lives of breast cancer survivors. The program honored breast cancer survivors on Friday by giving them a glamour treatment. The survivors were then photographed to commemorate their various stages of survivorship.
Breast cancer patient Dana Garcia thanked those who make the event possible.
“All the people that make this possible-” Garcia said. “For us, for all people who have cancer- we are very grateful.”
Organizers said the event is put together by volunteers, from the makeup artists to the photographer taking the portraits as the annual event aims to honor survivors, celebrate their beauty, raise awareness about breast cancer and inspire those newly diagnosed by showing that survival is possible.
