HEMPSTEAD, Texas (KBTX) – It’s a Texas tradition that is famously big, bold, and covered in glitter. Now, the colorful world of homecoming mums is taking center stage in “Mum Wars,” a brand-new reality competition series.
The high-stakes show follows ten teams of talented creators from all across the Lone Star State. Each team is given a surprise theme, a frantic race for supplies, and just three hours to craft a mind-blowing finished creation.
According to “Mum Wars” creator Leatha Sims, the craftsmanship is part of a massive, half-a-billion-dollar industry that is finally getting the spotlight it deserves. While the tradition originally began decades ago with simple, real chrysanthemums and tiny ribbons, it has evolved into massive, light-up spectacles adorned with personalized trinkets and yards of custom ribbon.
“I want all of America to know this Texas tradition,” Sims said. “And then when everybody finds out it’s a half-a-billion dollar industry just from August to November, I know somebody wants to make this a show. It is a show.”
Among the competitors are sisters Kailee Zack and Macey Hilton of “Little Miss Mums,” who traveled to the competition determined to bring home the crown.
“At the end of the day, we were going to do whatever it took to take home the check.Soif we had to nudge someone’s shoulder, it was okay, whatever it took.” Hilton said.
For the creators, the show is about much more than a prize and bragging rights. It’s an opportunity to showcase identity and community pride through a timeless Texas ritual, while honoring the intense dedication of the makers who work tirelessly to bring these high school dreams to life.
“This is hard work creating Homecoming Mums, and this is really what some people do for a living.” Zach said.
