Plano has added another national accolade to its growing list of recognitions. A new study from SmartAsset ranks Plano as the second safest large city in the United States, citing low crime rates, strong traffic safety and overall resilience. The ranking places Plano behind only Virginia Beach, Virginia, among cities with populations exceeding 250,000.
How The Rankings Were Determined
SmartAsset evaluated 83 of the nation’s largest cities using four key measures: violent crime, property crime, traffic fatality rates and natural disaster risk.
Plano stood out for posting some of the lowest crime rates among major U.S. cities. According to the study, the city reported 1.5 violent crimes and 14.7 property crimes per 1,000 residents. It also recorded 6.9 traffic fatalities per 100,000 residents.
While Plano received a “relatively high” natural disaster risk rating, its overall performance across the four categories was enough to earn the No. 2 spot nationally.
The rankings were based on the most recent data available from the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and FEMA’s National Risk Index.
Another National Honor For Plano
The latest recognition adds to a string of national rankings that have highlighted Plano’s quality of life over the past year.
Among its recent honors, Plano was named the fourth-best city in the country to raise a family by WalletHub. The city also earned the title of the fittest city in Texas and ranked 12th nationally in the American College of Sports Medicine’s annual fitness index.
Plano’s parks also received national recognition, with the city placing 13th in the nation in the Trust for Public Land’s ParkScore rankings. WalletHub additionally ranked Plano as the highest-rated city in Texas and 19th nationwide for people with disabilities.
