CLIFTON, Texas (KBTX) – Kasidy Stewart, a 30-year-old mother, is fighting for her life after a catastrophic crash on Highway 6 last week.
On July 20, Kasidy was taking her 3-year-old son, Asher, who has special needs, to his therapy appointment when tragedy struck near FM 2136, northwest of Clifton
According to DPS, Kasidy’s truck crossed into oncoming traffic, possibly to avoid a vehicle entering the intersection, and collided with a Ford F-250.
Asher miraculously survived, but Kasidy suffered a traumatic brain injury and remains in a coma. As she fights to wake up, her family is preparing for the long road to recovery ahead.
“To know that my 3-year-old nephew might not ever hear his mom’s voice again… just because somebody wanted to get somewhere a little bit faster than they should have,” said Stewart’s sister, Krystal Allen.

During the crash, Stewart’s truck entered a ditch and struck a metal bar that prevented the vehicle from colliding with nearby trees.
“They actually hit a bar that was in the ditch that did not break away,” Allen said. “They found that stuck in the motor, and it about split the front of the truck in half.”
While Asher suffered a broken femur, Allen believes the location of his car seat is the only reason he is still here.
“If he would have been where we normally put him, he wouldn’t be with us today,” Allen said.
Asher’s recovery, marked by smiles and laughter in his hospital bed, has become the family’s main source of strength.
“He’s just a blessing to everybody,” Allen said. “To be able to hear him laugh and know that he’s okay is huge for our family.”
The tragedy comes just as Stewart was starting nursing school with goals of becoming a pediatric nurse practitioner. Her drive to help children is deeply personal; eight years ago, Stewart lost her daughter to a rare chromosome disorder just before her second birthday.
“That’s just really been her drive is her kids,” Allen said. “Driving her to help others and be there for others like people were there for her during her times.”
Stewart is currently stable and breathing on her own. She has been moved out of the intensive care unit and is being transferred to a neurorehabilitation facility in Austin to begin her rehabilitation.
The investigation into the exact cause of the crash remains ongoing.
A GoFundMe has been established by the family to help cover medical expenses.
