EL PASO, TEXAS (KFOX14/CBS4) — Detention officers found an unresponsive inmate during a routine welfare check inside the El Paso County Detention Facility around 2:40 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 1, according to the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office.

Medical staff and the El Paso Fire Department responded and immediately began life-saving measures, but the inmate was pronounced dead.

The Sheriff’s Office said there are no indications of foul play.

The incident is being investigated by the Texas Rangers, the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office Major Crimes Unit and the Sheriff’s Office Internal Affairs Division. The Texas Commission on Jail Standards has also been notified in accordance with state law.

According to the Sheriff’s Office, this is the fourth in-custody death involving the agency in 2026, including three at the county detention facilities and one involving the Law Enforcement Bureau.

The Sheriff’s Office said the investigations remain ongoing and no additional information is being released at this time.
