Traveler’s Cart, the sister restaurant to Traveler’s Table that opened in 2024 and specialized in street food from across the world, announced on July 27 it would shutter for good July 31.

“Since our doors opened, you’ve filled these tables with laughter, embraced dishes you couldn’t quite pronounce, and made Traveler’s Cart part of your own adventures,” read the message posted to social media on July 27. “To our incredible team, thank you for your talent, passion, and unwavering dedication. You brought this vision to life every single day, and we’re grateful that this same passionate team will continue welcoming and serving our guests at Traveler’s Table.”

A press release with the announcement included thanks from Director of Operations Ryan Browne, who said that “while saying goodbye is never easy, we’re choosing to celebrate everything this restaurant has meant to our team and our guests.”

The closing occurred less than three months after one of the most shocking and devastating incidents the Houston food scene has seen. On May 4, the bodies of Traveler’s Cart owners, Matthew and Thy Mitchell, along with those of their two young children, were found dead inside their home. The incident is being investigated as a suspected murder-suicide, alleging Matthew Mitchell killed his wife and children before ending his life.

One day after Traveler’s Cart announced its closing, the Houston Chronicle reported Thy Mitchell’s parents filed a lawsuit alleging Matthew Mitchell planned the killings amid mounting financial losses and accusations of fraud. Included in court filings were chilling Ring camera videos revealing what is alleged to be Matthew Mitchell’s growing paranoia over financial issues. 

Thy Mitchell’s parents seek damages for wrongful death, punitive damages and a court-created trust over Matthew’s estate in their lawsuit filed in the Harris County Probate Court. 

Meanwhile, Traveler’s Cart on Saturday posted a message thanking its customers for the support. Its sister restaurant Traveler’s Table at 520 Westheimer Road in Houston remains open.
