Heads up, San Antonio drivers: Some more traffic headaches are on the way. The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) will shut down a popular stretch of a Northside interstate in just a few hours.
Interstate 10’s eastbound (EB) and westbound (WB) main lanes at the Loop 1604 interchange will be closed beginning at 9 p.m. and until 5 a.m. beginning on Friday, July 31. Weather permitting, the shutdowns will end on Monday, August 3, TxDOT wrote in a press release.
All flyover ramps at the interchange will remain open. Still, it could create some stalls near Six Flags Fiesta Texas, the Rim shopping center and UT San Antonio. It won’t help that the eastbound and westbound Loop 1604 frontage roads at the interchange will also be blocked during the same closure period.
However, the agency says it’s necessary so that its crews can work on the bridge, a task that is part of the Loop 1604 North Expansion Project. The $1.4 billion initiative involves improvements to 23 miles of road to increase mobility, reduce congestion and enhance safety on what TxDOT has labeled as “one of the most congested corridors” in the state. The plan, in its entirety, has an estimated completion year of 2028.
Detour: Drivers on the EB I-10 main lanes will be forced to take Exit 555 to the EB I-10 frontage road, TxDOT says. They will continue on the frontage road through the Loop 1604 interchange and will be able to re-enter the EB I-10 main lanes by taking the first available entrance ramp.
Trucks and oversized vehicles must exit the main lanes via the flyover ramp to WB Loop 1604. Drivers should take the Kyle Seale Parkway exit to the WB Loop 1604 frontage road, then use the U-turn at Kyle Seale Parkway to enter the EB Loop 1604 frontage road. Operators must then follow the posted signage to the flyover ramp and then to the entrance of the EB I-10 main lanes.
Detour: Commuters on the WB I-10 main lanes will take Exit 556B to the WB I-10 frontage road, according to TxDOT’s press release. They will continue on the frontage road through the Loop 1604 interchange and can access the WB I-10 main lanes after taking the first available entrance ramp.
Trucks and oversized vehicles must exit the main lanes via the flyover ramp to EB Loop 1604. Drivers should take the NW Military Highway exit to the EB Loop 1604 frontage road, then use the U-turn at NW Military Highway to enter the WB Loop 1604 frontage road. Operators must then follow the posted signage to the flyover ramp and then to the entrance of the WB I-10 main lanes
