HOUSTON — Thousands of Houston-area students are heading into the new school year with a little extra help.
On Saturday, families packed the George R. Brown Convention Center for the Mayor’s 16th Annual Back 2 School and Health Fair where they received free backpacks, school supplies, and health services.
KHOU 11’s Jacob Rascon welcomed the crowd before Mayor John Whitmire offered students one simple challenge:

“All we’re asking from them, is study hard, use these supplies,” the mayor said.
Among the first in line was Kiannah Moten, who arrived an hour early with her son and daughter. She joined the mayor on stage during the opening ceremony.
“It means a lot to the community,” Moten said.
Just a few steps away, families picked up their free backpacks full of classroom essentials. Families said it’s a crucial service.
“Very crucial; sometimes it’s hard for parents out there, and we need the help, and we appreciate the help that y’all are giving us,” one parent, Dora Smith, said.
Smith’s daughter, Saleah, said she’s looking forward to the new school year.
“I’m going to middle school for the first time,” she said.
The event was about more than just checking supplies off the list. Kids were able to climb aboard emergency vehicles, meet with first responders, and explore booths throughout the convention center.
“It’s a blessing,” one grandmother said.
“First time we had a chance to do this, and they’re really enjoying themselves with all the activities they’ve got going on here,” a grandfather said.
Beyond the fun, families could also take advantage of free dental and vision screenings, along with vaccinations, something parent Alyssa Gonzalez said made all the difference.
“As a mom who doesn’t get approved for Medicaid or CHIP and makes too much money, paying out of pocket for a shot is like $200 a shot, so this helps me tremendously.
