Automated license plate readers have quietly spread across the U.S., and one company, Flock Safety, is now at the center of a growing privacy debate.
The Bexar County Sheriff’s Office has installed 35 Flock cameras throughout the county, placing them in high-crime areas based on local crime data. The cameras capture license plates, vehicle make, model, color and other details. This information has generated leads that deputies say have recently helped solve armed robberies, homicides, stolen vehicle cases and narcotics investigations.
But the technology’s expansion has drawn sharp criticism and questions over unchecked mass surveillance.
