LUBBOCK — Nearly 30 students from across West Texas explored energy and engineering careers while gaining hands-on STEM experience at the ExxonMobil STEM Camp on July 30 at Texas Tech University.
Designed for Region 18 students in grades 9-12, the one-day camp introduced participants to science and technology used in the energy industry.
Campers worked alongside Texas Tech students to build functioning reservoir models, explore carbon capture and storage technologies and use laboratory equipment to measure carbon dioxide.
Throughout the day, students applied engineering principles, worked together to solve complex challenges and gained practical experience with concepts used by scientists and engineers.
“ExxonMobil is proud to support this exciting hands-on academic camp,” said Matt Mathis, ExxonMobil Midland production manager. “The interactive activities bridge the gap between classroom learning and real-world applications, giving these students a deeper understanding of how STEM skills are used to address today’s energy and environmental challenges.”
The camp used curriculum developed by the Tapia Center at Rice University and also introduced students to college life and academic pathways in STEM fields.
Students learned about college majors, connected with current university students and learned about higher education and career opportunities.
The experience also gave students an achievement they can include on college applications and résumés.
