The store is expected to close on September 30 as owner Carol Johnson retires, according to reports. MySA reached out to Johnson Furniture Co. for comment but did not hear back by the time of publication.
The closing marks the end of a business with roots stretching back more than a century at its historic location.
According to the company’s website, the building at the site dates back to the late 1800s, when Rudolph DuMenil purchased the property and opened a general store. In 1902, the building became home to C.J. Ludewig Furniture after being sold to Cuno J. Ludewig.
Ludewig later expanded the property in 1929, adding a second building featuring steel framing, a brick exterior, a pressed tin ceiling, curly maple floors and a wooden staircase. The location became known as a place to find quality furniture in Central Texas.
The Johnson family took over the business in 1966, when Dorothy and Wallace Johnson purchased C.J. Ludewig Furniture and renamed it Johnson Furniture Company.
Their daughter, Carol Johnson, later returned to the family business after graduating from Texas State University with a degree in interior design and minors in construction and photography. She officially became owner of the store in 1989.
For decades, Johnson Furniture has been part of the fabric of the New Braunfels community, helping residents furnish their homes while providing personalized service.
“Most of all, we want to thank you for allowing us to be part of your homes, your milestones, and your lives for the past 60 wonderful years,” the company said in an announcement about the closure.
The store’s End of Business Sale began August 4, with all in-stock merchandise discounted 15% through August 9. The company wrote that markdowns will increase each week as it prepares to close.
