LUBBOCK, Texas (KFDA) – The Science Spectrum & Omni Theater has been serving the Lubbock community for nearly 40 years.
Administrative manager James Nesmith says the Science Spectrum’s current location is actually their second home.
It originally started 38 years ago off Slide Road across from the mall.
“The first permanent facility was opened about 1989 and it was there for about four years until the current home where we’re at today was available,” said Nesmith. “Then it was moved and the entire facility was remodeled.”
The Science Spectrum is a local nonprofit run by a board of directors. The facility is a hybrid of a typical science center and children’s museum in one.
“That’s I think what has led to some of the popularity in Lubbock and things people wanting to come over and over again,” said Nesmith. “We help fill that niche or that need for both in our community.”
Nesmith says the mission of the Science Spectrum is science education.
The facility offers other types of education as well, but they primarily focus on science.
“We want to make science accessible. We want to make it to where not only just children, but families and even adults can come here and maybe it’s normally something that they’ve been a little apprehensive to want to look at or think about or talk about,” said Nesmith.
The Science Spectrum offers a base foundation and a place where people can ask questions.
“Again, that for so many, unless you have the resources to travel to a bigger city, this may be one of the closest opportunities you have to get hands-on with science and animals and history and art,” said Nesmith. “We want to help fill that need for folks.”
The Science Spectrum & Omni Theater is located at 2579 S Loop 335 Suite 250.
