Teachers, staff and administrators gathered to celebrate a new school year and prepare for students’ return.
CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — More than 6,000 Corpus ISD employees gathered Tuesday morning at the American Bank Center’s Hilliard Center Arena for Convocation 2026, the district’s annual event marking the start of a new school year.
The celebration brings together teachers, administrators and staff from across the district before students return to the classroom on Tuesday, Aug. 11.

Mary Carroll High School basketball coach Tremaine Hancock said the event showcases the family atmosphere that keeps educators motivated.
“It’s awesome. It’s a great family atmosphere here in Corpus ISD,” Hancock said. “The things that we do for the children and the community is just amazing.”
Hancock, who has worked in Corpus ISD for four years and spent 22 years in education, said helping students succeed is what continues to inspire him each year.
“Giving back to the kids, that’s what it’s all about,” Hancock said. “Nothing’s better than helping kids become great, helping them understand what life is about to bring and getting the best out of them.”
He said reconnecting with fellow educators before the school year begins also helps build excitement for the months ahead.
“It’s always great to get back around the colleagues,” Hancock said. “This district is awesome. I’ve been here four years, and it’s nothing but love — a lot of family.”
Hancock also credited Superintendent Dr. Roland Hernandez for fostering that culture across the district. “It starts with Dr. Hernandez,” Hancock said. “It’s just awesome, and I appreciate it.”
Corpus ISD’s annual convocation serves as the official kickoff to the new school year, celebrating educators and staff before campuses welcome students back for another year of learning.
