CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — he Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT), in collaboration with the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS), will share safe driving messages in an effort to reduce traffic fatalities in Texas.
Both departments hosted a conference Friday morning to address daily traffic fatalities and announced a partnership and initiative to crack down on reckless driving.
Today marks a tragic milestone for Texas highways. It’s been 25 years since the last day without a traffic fatality in the state.
Juan Marfil, the Director of TxDOT said, “We want to make sure we’re ending the streak for Texas deaths We are at 91,000 deaths total since 25 years, since the movement started.”
DPS Sgt. Rob Mallory said, “We stood out here this morning to challenge ourselves and to challenge our fellow Texans to make the right choices behind the wheel.”
Sgt. Mallory, with his message to the community, “There are a lot of Texans with empty seats around the table this year due to fatal car crashes that have happened in the last 25 years. We want to see that stop.”
In response to the tragic streak of daily traffic fatalities, TxDOT is calling on drivers to make safe decisions every time they get behind the wheel.
Sgt. Mallory advises drivers to slow down, especially this holiday season. He adds, “You can’t be in a rush when you get behind the wheel; every action you take behind the wheel of that car can potentially have an impact on your life and the lives of your fellow Texans. Our focus needs to be on the task of driving.”
