A drug deal that went awry in June ended in the shooting death of a 26-year-old Fort Worth man, according to documents supporting a suspect’s arrest.
Marquette Harmon, 41, was one of two murder suspects arrested last week in the killing of Byron Cherry, the Star-Telegram previously reported. Family members described Cherry in an online obituary as someone with “a bright smile that could ignite a room and a laugh so genuine it invited everyone around him to join in joy.“
The day prior to Cherry’s death, a witness told police he arranged for Harmon and another person to conduct a narcotics transaction, according to a warrant for Harmon’s arrest.
The day of the killing, the witness said he was confronted by Cherry and the other man about allegedly being short on the quantity of drugs purchased from Harmon, according to the arrest warrant affidavit. The witness agreed to have all the men meet to settle the dispute.
At the meeting the night of June 16 in the 1300 block of East Baltimore Avenue, Harmon, Cherry and another person began to argue over the drug deal, according to the affidavit. During the argument, one of the people who arrived with Harmon produced a firearm and shot Cherry.
Another witness told police that Harmon had asked him and several other people to go to the meeting because Harmon was aware that he was going to have a confrontation with Cherry, according to the affidavit. The witness described seeing Cherry pull a gun on another man, Quinton Robinson, who then shot Cherry.
Robinson, 18, was also arrested last week and faces a murder charge in Cherry’s death, the Star-Telegram previously reported.
Surveillance footage from homes near the scene of the shooting isn’t clear, but lines up with what witnesses told detectives about the shooting, police wrote in the affidavit.
Harmon is being held in the Tarrant County Jail with bond set at over $1 million. He faces a felony murder charge over his alleged involvement in the shooting. He also faces charges of unlawful carrying of a weapon and evading arrest.
Robinson also is being held on more than $1 million bond in the murder case, and he faces additional charges of engaging in organized criminal activity, aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, evading arrest and failure to identify, court records show.
