Coworking space Switchyards is opening two more locations in the East End and Bellaire after its Montrose neighborhood work club sold all of its memberships within an hour.
The Atlanta-based chain operates members-only, 24/7 workspaces across the country that are equipped with call booths, silent study rooms and unlimited coffee. Last year in September, Switchyards made its Houston debut with its South Shepherd Drive location.
“After Montrose sold out on the day memberships went up, we knew we had to continue finding good spots in great neighborhoods,” said CEO Michael Tavani in a press release. “We’re excited to bring Switchyards to the East End neighborhood.”
The expansion comes as Houston’s workforce continues to settle into hybrid work. Although the share of people working from home has fallen from pandemic highs, many employees, freelancers and entrepreneurs still want flexible places to work outside a traditional office, fueling demand for neighborhood coworking spaces like Switchyards.
In the Houston area, the share of the workforce that worked from home dipped from 15.5% to 12% between 2021 and 2024, according to the U.S. Census Bureau’s American Community Survey, as employers increasingly enforced return-to-office policies. But that share is still double Houston’s 2019 figure of 5%.
The new East End space, a 4,200-square-foot building, will feature a cafe area where members can host meetings. It opens Aug. 31 at 3401 Harrisburg Boulevard.
Houstonians can buy one of 250 available memberships for $129, when they go on sale Aug. 27 at 10 a.m.
Jack Henry Decker, a partnerships specialist at Switchyards, said a Bellaire location will also open this year, but did not specify when.
With a Switchyards membership, members have access to all 38 coworking spaces across the country, including locations in Austin and Dallas.
