EL PASO, Texas (KFOX14/CBS4) — The El Paso Museum of Art has been named one of the top five art museums in Texas, a statewide recognition that city leaders say highlights the museum’s collections, regional focus and continued growth.

Glasstire, described as the nation’s oldest online-only art magazine, recently updated its ranking of Texas art museums for the first time in a decade and placed the El Paso Museum of Art at No. 5.

In a state that is home to nearly 100 art museums and some of the finest collections in the nation, we are extremely proud to represent West Texas and the Borderlands through this recognition,” El Paso Museum of Art Director Edward Hayes Jr. said. “This honor reflects the dedication of our staff, their commitment to our mission, and their work to advance Frontera Forward, an initiative designed to elevate our rich bicultural community through relevant exhibitions and special programs. We share this recognition with our extended family of docents, teaching artists, members, sponsors, and the more than 75,000 people who visit our free museum each year.

The recognition follows what the city described as a significant investment in modernizing the museum’s infrastructure. In its ranking, Glasstire highlighted the museum’s commitment to showcasing local and regional talent, along with the important artists represented in its permanent collection.

The honor comes during a period of growth for the museum, including the opening of Star Ceiling: El Paso, a privately funded permanent installation by artist Leo Villareal; record attendance for the recent exhibition Frida Kahlo: Sus Fotos; and the upcoming 2026 Border Biennial, opening in September at the El Paso Museum of Art and the Museo de Arte de Ciudad Juárez.

The El Paso Museum of Art joins other institutions included in the ranking, including the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, and the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth.

The museum is free and open to the public Wednesday through Sunday. Museum hours, location information and upcoming events are available at EPMA.art.
