Harris County Judge Lina Hidalgo wants you to pay for a pet program so badly, that she’s asking commissioners to approve a tax hike they already rejected.
Specifically she is looking to raise property taxes to pay for a daycare and preschool subsidy. This is despite the fact that the county has budget issues and commissioners are still working to find basic necessities.
“We are focused, at least I am, on statutory responsibility,” Precinct Three Republican Tom Ramsey told KTRH. he says now isn’t the time for what amounts to a 64 million dollar tax increase.
“In order for us to fund our spending, we are going to have to implement the highest tax rate in the history of Harris County,” he added.
Ramsey pointed to this as another example of Harris county’s spending problem, which he says has to be addressed.
Commissioners Court meets Thursday morning.
