An officer with the Dallas Independent School District was shot and wounded Thursday morning at a Walmart Supercenter in northwest Dallas, officials confirmed to The Dallas Morning News. A second, unrelated officer shooting was reported an hour and a half earlier in a residential neighborhood in North Dallas — less than three miles away.
Dallas Fire-Rescue was dispatched at 10:49 a.m. to a gunshot wound call at the store in the 4100 block of Lyndon B. Johnson Freeway. More than a dozen Dallas police units were also responding to the location, according to a police call log. The calls were listed under “assist officer with ambulance.”
A DISD spokesperson told The News the officer was wounded while “assisting a citizen” off-campus. The officer, who has not been identified, was taken to a hospital; their condition was unknown.
Outside of Sam’s Club, dozens of police officers and detectives swarmed the parking lot, questioning shoppers and drivers in the area.
At least three Dallas police vehicles were parked behind the building, blocking the alleyway behind the Walmart, which sits next door and shares a parking lot with Sam’s Club.
“The safety of our associates and members is a top priority,” a Walmart spokesperson wrote in a statement. “We’re working with law enforcement as they continue to investigate.”
