The draft Innovate Arlington Comprehensive Plan is now available for the community to review and comment on.
Developed through 18 months of research, analysis and extensive community engagement, the Plan provides a long-range guide for how Arlington can grow, invest and make decisions over the next 20 years.

Innovate Arlington is designed to protect what residents value, prepare for future change and help the City respond to evolving community needs. It provides a shared direction for coordinating City decisions, public investments, development and community partnerships.
The draft combines residents’ ideas with an evaluation of Arlington’s demographic, economic, market and growth trends.
Five Community-Informed Visions
The plan is organized around five visions for Arlington’s future:

Together, these visions describe the Arlington residents want to build: a city with strong neighborhoods, a thriving economy, safer and more convenient ways to get around, healthy and sustainable places and a community where people feel connected and welcome.
From Vision to Action
Innovate Arlington has two parts.
The first part describes Arlington’s community-informed vision, long-term policies, growth strategy and major ideas for the future.
The second part explains how that vision may be carried out through coordinated actions, recommended updates to development rules, strategic investments, partnerships and public progress reporting.
The plan does not rezone property, approve development projects or commit funding by itself. It provides direction for future decisions, which would continue to follow their required public review, budgeting and approval processes.
The five visions guide 31 goals and aspirations, 25 major innovations and 52 recommended near-term actions.
Major recommendations include:
Protect and reinvest in established neighborhoods, corridors and public spaces.
Guide purposeful growth to locations where it fits and can provide the greatest community benefit.
Tailor development and investment approaches to the needs and surroundings of different parts of Arlington.
Strengthen aging corridors and neighborhood-serving destinations.
Create engaging public spaces, cultural destinations and community gathering areas.
Improve connections between neighborhoods, jobs, schools, parks, services and major destinations.
Support small businesses, innovation, workforce development and long-term economic resilience.
Use public dollars strategically and align development rules with community priorities.
Track progress publicly and adjust the Plan as Arlington’s needs change.
Encourage residents, businesses, institutions and community organizations to share responsibility for Arlington’s future.
Share Your Feedback
Community feedback remains an important part of completing Innovate Arlington. Residents are encouraged to review the draft, leave comments online and identify areas that may need clarification or improvement.
Members of the public may also join City staff, consultants and elected officials to learn more about the draft and provide feedback at an upcoming Innovate Arlington Town Hall.
