Three Plano restaurants were temporarily closed during recent inspections after health inspectors found a roach infestation and other serious violations, according to the city’s inspection reports.
The reports compiled by the Star-Telegram contain data on health violations from 91 inspections between July 26 and Aug 1.
Plano’s health inspections function on a 100-point scale, where a score of 100 is considered perfect and a score of 70 is considered extremely poor. Each establishment receives between one and four routine inspections per year.
Nizam’s Biryaniwala at 909 W. Spring Creek Parkway, Suite 230, was temporarily closed after health inspectors noted a cockroach infestation and a lack of managerial control. More than 20 live and 100 dead roaches were seen at the eatery. Some spices at the restaurant were contaminated with live roaches and inspectors considered them adulterated and not safe for human consumption. Score: 50.
Hunan Bistro at 2220 Coit Road, Suite 420, was temporarily closed due to various health hazards including repeated handwashing failures, cross-contamination and food held at unsafe temperatures. Inspectors also found chemicals stored above a food-preparation table and raw pork thawing at room temperature. The restaurant scored 59 and was ordered to remain closed until it received written approval from the Plano Health Department. The restaurant was re-opened after a follow-up inspection with an updated score of 90.
Andrew’s American Pizza Kitchen at 1401 Preston Road was temporarily closed after health inspectors found no hot water at two hand sinks and the dishwasher. The restaurant also lacked a working method to sanitize food-contact surfaces and had failed to install a required three-compartment sink. Inspectors noted that the dishwasher was not sanitizing properly and provided education to employees on manual sanitization. The establishment was ordered to repair the machine and must undergo a follow-up inspection in 10 days. Score: 56.
One restaurant had issues with rodent droppings:
Fred’s Downtown Philly at 2229 W. 15th St., Suite A. Health inspectors observed seven rodent droppings in the water heater drain pan. Score: 84.
In addition to Nizam’s Biryaniwala, two other eateries had issues with roaches:
D’Oh! Nuts at 3115 W. Parker Road, Suite 535. Health inspectors found two live roaches in the kitchen. Score: 96.
Blue Goose Cantina at 4757 W. Park Blvd, Suite 101. Health inspectors observed one dead roach in dry storage that they noted to have been there for some time. A pest inspection was conducted at the restaurant. Score: 100.
