Josh Broghamer has agreed to join the Orlando Magic as an assistant coach, a person familiar with the decision confirmed to The Dallas Morning News.
NBA insider Marc Stein first reported Broghamer’s decision to join Sean Sweeney’s staff.
Broghamer reunites with Sweeney, who became the Magic’s new head coach in May after one season as the associate head coach of the San Antonio Spurs. Both coaches served as assistants for the Mavericks under Kidd, overlapping for two seasons of the five-year era.
Broghamer spent the last three seasons as an assistant with the Mavericks, serving primarily in a player development role. He was the franchise’s summer league coach in 2025, when he developed a close bond with Mavericks star Cooper Flagg. Broghamer also conducted Flagg’s pregame workout routine throughout his historic rookie season.
Before his arrival in Dallas, Broghamer spent five seasons with the Cleveland Cavaliers under four different head coaches. He also served as a member of Kidd’s coaching staff in Milwaukee from 2014 to 2018.
Broghamer is the second assistant to leave the Mavericks for the Orlando Magic. Popeye Jones also joined Sweeney’s coaching staff as a lead assistant after just one season in his coaching return to Dallas. The Golden State Warriors hired Frank Vogel as an associate head coach under Steve Kerr, while Jay Triano joined Micah Nori’s first coaching staff in Portland.
The Mavericks have begun a new era under head coach Dusty May, who constructed his own coaching staff comprised of Willie Green, Joe Boylan, Garrett Temple, Drew Williamson and Mody Maor. May said during his introductory news conference that he would retain members of Kidd’s staff. Assistant coach Phil Handy is the only holdover remaining from the previous coaching staff.
