The El Paso Zoo and Botanical Gardens is temporarily closed Saturday, Aug. 8 after an overnight thunderstorm caused damage throughout the zoo grounds.
According to city officials, strong winds and severe weather knocked down several trees and damaged power lines. No animals or staff members were injured.
Crews are assessing the damage, removing debris and making necessary repairs before the zoo reopens to the public.
El Paso Electric will be replacing four wood poles that were damaged by the storms with steel poles. El Paso Electric officials said the pairs should be complete by the evening.
The zoo is currently scheduled to reopen Sunday during its normal operating hours from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
