AMARILLO, Texas (KVII) — Casey’s General Stores has entered into an agreement to acquire all 24 Pak-A-Sak convenience stores, bringing one of the Texas Panhandle’s best-known locally owned chains under the umbrella of one of the nation’s largest convenience store companies.
The locations are primarily in the Amarillo area and would significantly expand Casey’s presence in the region. A purchase price and expected closing date were not immediately announced.
In a statement to ABC 7 News, the McKee family said the decision to sell comes after three generations of building Pak-A-Sak into a Panhandle institution.
“For three generations, Pak-A-Sak has been more than a business to our family — it has been our life’s work,” the family said. “We have grown from a single location into a staple of the Texas Panhandle, and that success is due entirely to the dedication, hard work, and heart of our employees.”
The family said it selected Casey’s because the companies share values centered on community service, quality and a family-friendly environment.
“We are in the early stages of this transition and at this time nothing changes in our day-to-day operations,” the McKee family said. “We appreciate our team continuing to do what they do best — serving our guests and communities.”
Pak-A-Sak traces its roots to 1978, when Dale and Joyce McKee opened the company’s first store in Canyon. The business grew from that single location to 24 stores across the Texas Panhandle and is now operated by the third generation of the McKee family.
In a statement to ABC 7 News, a Casey’s spokesperson confirmed the agreement.
“Casey’s, the third largest convenience chain, has entered into an agreement to acquire 24 Pak-A-Sak stores in northern Texas,” the spokesperson said. “These high-quality locations are primarily in the Amarillo area and will add to the company’s growing number of units in the state.”
The spokesperson added, “We look forward to the next steps in this transaction and welcoming the employees at these locations to the Casey’s family.”
The deal marks another major expansion for the Iowa-based company in Texas.
Casey’s opened its first store in Boone, Iowa, in 1968 and has grown to more than 2,900 stores across 19 states. The Fortune 500 company says it is now the third-largest convenience store retailer in the United States and the fifth-largest pizza chain.
Its push into Texas accelerated with the $1.145 billion acquisition of Fikes Wholesale Inc., the parent company of CEFCO Convenience Stores. The deal, completed in November 2024, added 198 stores, including 148 in Texas, as well as locations in Alabama, Florida and Mississippi. It was the largest acquisition in Casey’s history.
That acquisition eventually brought the Casey’s name to Amarillo.
The city’s first Casey’s opened Feb. 20 at 14901 Interstate 27, between Amarillo and Canyon. The location had previously operated as a CEFCO and was converted following the Fikes acquisition.
The proposed Pak-A-Sak acquisition would give Casey’s a much larger footprint in Amarillo and surrounding Panhandle communities while bringing an end to nearly five decades of independent ownership for Pak-A-Sak.
The McKee family said its focus during the transition remains on the employees and communities that helped build the business.
“Because we care deeply about the future of this company we have decided to enter into an agreement to sell Pak-A-Sak to Casey’s General Stores,” the family said. “We are confident in selecting Casey’s for this next chapter.”
