Texas A&M’s first full practice open to the media took place on Saturday afternoon, and after former five-star wide receiver Terry Bussey made his post-weight gain and offseason training debut, now standing 5’10” and 205 pounds, stood out during Wednesday’s first preseason practice after reeling in 18 receptions for 195 yards and a touchdown, and will head into the most important season of his young career.
During NFL training camps and every college football preseason, the proverbial “drum beat” for players that continue to mount impressive performances is one of the best indicators for future success, and after Terry Bussey’s improvement this spring, combined with his one-handed catch on Saturday, it’s clear that, combined with Mario Craver, Alabama transfer Isaiah Horton, and Ashton Bethel-Roman, Texas A&M starting wide receiver rotation is one of the deepest units in college football.
It’s important to note that Terry Bussey entered the program as an athlete with the potential to play at wide receiver, running back, or cornerback, and while he could have thrived at either position, coach Mike Elko and wide receivers coach turned first-year offensive coordinator Holmon Wiggins felt that, even though it would take a couple years of development, playing wide receiver provided Bussey his best path towards the NFL.
Ask any beat reporter at Saturday practice, and you’ll get the same response; Terry Bussey has indeed taken that next step after adding weight and becoming one of the better route runners, while his soft hands and toughness will certainly come in handy this season. This is just the start of what all of us expect from Terry Bussey, who is competing for the No. 3 or 4 wide receiver job.
