Austin family spends time restoring historical markers around Central Texas
AUSTIN (KXAN) — In a state as big as Texas, there is a lot of history.
There are also a lot of historical markers and each one has a unique story to share with those who stop by.
Ricki Camargo and his family have made it a mission to restore historical markers around Austin and Central Texas.
“I do this because I love Texas history,” said Camargo.
Camargo and his family have volunteered their time to restore about 70 historical markers.
“I have always been a Texas History buff and during the pandemic, I was looking for a new hobby, so we got with the historical commission and volunteered as people that clean, and repaint and recondition historical marker plaques,” said Camargo.
His two daughters started helping him about a year ago.
“At the beginning some of them are really dirty and you can hardly read them and at the end they are clean and you can really read them,” said Gracie Camargo.
Camargo says he’s happy to give back to the community, but it’s also nice to spend time with family and learn a little about Texas and Austin history.
“We are saving Texas history one marker at a time,” said Camargo.
The family started an Instagram page to educate people about the work they do and teach people about the markers they fix.
