CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — A local nonprofit is helping foster children across South Texas start the school year with something new of their own.
Foster Angels of South Texas, also known as FAST, recently held its ninth annual “Give Them Wings” shoe drive.
The event provided more than 500 pairs of new shoes for children in foster care.

CPS caseworkers were able to browse the donated and purchased shoes and select pairs for children in their care.
The giveaway served foster children throughout the Coastal Bend, as well as children in the Valley and Laredo.
Organizers also provided gift cards for children who needed a specific shoe size or style that was not available during the event.
The goal is to make sure children entering a new school year have a new pair of shoes that fits and makes them feel confident.
FAST says events like the annual shoe drive are part of its broader effort to support children in foster care and provide resources to families and caseworkers.
For children who may already be dealing with major changes in their lives, organizers say having something new to start the school year can make a meaningful difference.
The “Give Them Wings” shoe drive has now become an annual tradition, with this year’s event marking the ninth year FAST has worked to provide new shoes to foster children across South Texas.
