For nearly 30 years, Walmart has operated its own neighborhood markets, or smaller-sized stores that place a heavy emphasis on grocery goods. Back in May 2024, company leaders unveiled plans to invest even more into the store concepts, committing to “opening or converting more than 150 stores” to neighborhood markets by the end of the decade.
Now, it’s funneling approximately $3.6 million into a Walmart remodel in Garland, a suburb northeast of Dallas, according to project filings registered with the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation on Monday, August 4. Encompassed in the alteration project is an estimated 23,700-square-foot project scope, with complete revitalizations to both the interiors and exteriors of the store.
Alongside that TLC, the project calls for upgraded restrooms and online pickup areas, a relocated customer checkout area, a pharmacy and improvements to its grocery sale offerings, the TDLR filing added.
Construction on the store — located at 101 W. Buckingham Road, Garland, TX 75040 — is expected to begin in late January 2027 and wrap work on or around May 20, 2027. TDLR filings are estimates and both construction costs and project timelines are subject to change.
Garland residents will soon have plenty of grocery store options to patronize, as H-E-B announced earlier this year two upcoming projects in Garland: a Joe V’s Smart Shop at the northeast corner of Centerville Road and LBJ Freeway, as well as a proposed H-E-B store on a 21-acre site nestled between Crist Road and Firewheel Parkway.
