A man allegedly used a Dallas Independent School District police officer’s gun to shoot him in the leg before fleeing from a northwest Dallas Sam’s Club parking lot, according to an arrest warrant affidavit obtained Monday.
Jose Santiago Pantoja-Morales, 27, was arrested and faces a charge of aggravated assault on a public servant. It remains unclear if Pantoja-Morales has an attorney.
According to the affidavit, Dallas ISD officer Justin Jones, 39, was performing a routine patrol Thursday when he was flagged down shortly before 10:40 a.m. by a man who said his co-worker, Pantoja-Morales, had left his vehicle and was walking down LBJ Freeway.

Jones found Pantoja-Morales walking eastbound down a median on the freeway, where he willingly got into the back of Jones’ patrol car, according to the affidavit.
While Jones was driving him to the Walmart at 4062 LBJ Freeway, Pantoja-Morales began pulling things out of Jones’ work bag. Jones pulled over between the Walmart and Sam’s, opened the door to the backseat and attempted to turn Pantoja-Morales around to face the vehicle.

Pantoja-Morales began to resist, and the two fell to the ground. According to the affidavit, Jones fell on top of him, and Pantoja-Morales was able to pull Jones’ weapon and shoot him once in the right leg before fleeing.
In a news conference Thursday afternoon, Dallas police originally said Jones was shot in the torso.

Jones was transported to Parkland Memorial Hospital for surgery. He was listed in stable condition as of Friday.
Officers continued the search for Pantoja-Morales and found him about 11 a.m. in the 400 block of High Summit Drive, where he surrendered at gunpoint after attempting to run again. Both officers who apprehended him said they noticed blood on his shirt and boots, the affidavit said.
Pantoja-Morales was transported to Dallas police headquarters, where he was read his Miranda rights and agreed to speak with detectives. He told officers he had taken the gun from Jones and shot him so he could “get away.”

He was then transported to Lew Sterrett Justice Center.

The officer-involved shooting that injured Jones was one of three that occurred within less than 24 hours last week.
Shortly before 9:30 a.m. Thursday, an armed robbery suspect led police on a chase from Oak Cliff to North Dallas, ending less than three miles from where Jones was shot. When the chase ended, one officer fired his weapon before realizing a covert officer was near the suspect.
Police said no one was injured, and the suspect was arrested and faces charges of unauthorized use of a motor vehicle, robbery and unlawful possession of a firearm.

On Friday, Isidoro Melo-Munoz, 37, was found by Dallas police holding a knife over a woman at a northern Dallas apartment complex. He was arrested Saturday after initially fleeing the scene when officers ordered him to drop his weapon.

The woman was transported to the hospital where she underwent surgery and was later listed in stable condition.
Police said none of the shootings were related.
