Police said 44-year-old Joel Garza faces two felony charges after returning to a road construction site and firing shots into the air.
CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — A Corpus Christi man has been arrested after police said he returned to a road construction zone and fired gunshots into the air during an early morning incident near Yorktown Boulevard and Oso Parkway.
Corpus Christi police identified the suspect as Joel Garza, 44, after investigating two connected incidents that happened early Tuesday.
According to police, officers first responded around 2:40 a.m. after receiving reports of a suspected intoxicated driver who drove through construction signs and safety barriers in an active work zone, creating a hazard for road crews. The driver fled on foot before officers arrived.
About an hour later, at 4:01 a.m., officers were called back to the same location after reports of gunfire.
Witnesses told investigators the original suspect returned with several other people and fired shots into the air before leaving the area.
No injuries were reported.
Detectives later identified Garza as the suspect and obtained warrants charging him with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and deadly conduct by discharging a firearm. He was taken into custody shortly afterward.
Police said they have descriptions of the other individuals involved and the vehicle used in the incident. The investigation remains ongoing.
