It’s a sad truth that beef prices are rising across the country, and it’s going to be several years before prices begin to drop. That means anyone craving Texas barbecue and that famous brisket needs to have a deep wallet or make sacrifices on their plate. Luckily, the best place to do it doesn’t skimp on the beef while also saving some money.

Cheapism has released a list of Spots in Each State You Can Get Good, Cheap BBQ, identifying one place in all 50 states where visitors can grab good barbecue at a discount price. In Texas, that honor goes to Kreuz Market in Lockhart, a staple of the Barbecue Capital of Texas that has been delighting guests with its smoked meats for more than 100 years.

Founded in 1900 as a meat market, Kreuz Market eventually expanded into the barbecue business and became a statewide attraction. Unlike most low-and-slow methods used today, Kreuz Market puts its briskets on the pits untrimmed and blazes them over a 500-degree heat, constantly flipping the meats until they reach perfection. The heat is unavoidable as it will hit you the moment you step inside.

“Lockhart proudly calls itself the Barbecue Capital of Texas, and Kreuz Market has long stood among the town’s most celebrated smokehouses,” Cheapism writes. “Rather than focusing on elaborate presentation, the restaurant serves brisket, sausage, pork chops, turkey, and beef ribs on butcher paper, letting the quality of the meat speak for itself.”

Cheapism adds, “Even with its worldwide reputation, many reviewers say Kreuz Market still offers fair prices for the quality and authenticity it delivers, making it an essential stop for anyone exploring Central Texas barbecue.”

As far as prices, Kreuz Market charges $32.90 per pound of brisket, beef shoulder clod and beef ribs, $39.90 per pound of boneless prime rib, $22.90 per pound of pork chops, smoked turkey and pork ribs, $3.70 for hot sausage link, $3.40 for a cold sausage link, $3.90 for a hot jalapeno cheese sausage link and $3.60 for a cold jalapeno sausage link.
