Texas A&M women’s basketball used a strong defense and near triple-double Wednesday night to blow past an in-state foe.
A&M breezed past the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Islanders 81-43 in their season opener. The Aggies held the Islanders to 14-of-41 (34.1%) shooting from the field while shooting 30-for-76 (39.5%). A strong run at the end of the first half built a 20-point lead for the hosting Aggies. After leading by just four after the opening quarter, A&M won the second period 25-7.
Transfer guard Ny’Ceara Pryor racked up 16 points, eight assists, eight steals and six rebounds. The last Aggie to record more than seven steals in a game was Curtyce Knox (Nov. 26 against Abilene Christian). Five Aggies scored eight or more points, with four in double figures.
Samora Watson led the way for the visitors with 12 points.
The win was a nice start for an Aggies team that was hurt by injuries last season and was picked to finish 13th in the conference, per the preseason media poll.
A&M next takes the court against Tarleton State at 11 a.m. next Thursday in the program’s annual elementary school day game.
