Don Toliver’s sold-out show at Toyota Center came to an abrupt end Tuesday night when house lights flooded the venue and an announcer directed fans to exit.
The Houston rapper had just performed the songs “Kryptonite” and “Too Many Nights” before walking offstage around 10:40 p.m. It seemed like a normal break in the show — but Toliver never reappeared, and several overhead lights flickered on.
The normal Octane Tour setlist includes three more songs. Some fans began to chant “Don! Don!” A few minutes later, they started the wave around the venue. Adding to the confusion, an unseen person took to the microphone and urged people to “sit the f*** down” because the show wasn’t over. Seconds later, the building’s full house lights flooded the arena, and an announcer directed people to the exits.
“Sorry for the inconvenience. The show is over,” he said. “Please go the nearest exit. Exit safely. Thank you, and have a good night.”
The announcement was followed by several boos as people filed up the aisles and out of the venue.
Requests for comment sent late Tuesday to representatives for Toyota Center, Live Nation and Toliver were not immediately returned.
Fans expectedly took to social media to vent their frustrations, asking, “How do y’all explain the feeling of ending it early?” and saying they were “still confused on what happened at the end.”
Before the commotion, Toliver delivered a high energy set almost identical to his May performance. (This is the second leg of the same Octane Tour.) If anything, the crowd was even more animated this time, ready to rage from opening song “E85.” They opened up a mosh pit that lasted the run of the show.
Toliver himself joined fans on the floor for a few songs, including “K9,” “No Pole” and “Too Much Money in Here.” He also soared above the floor on a circular stage as the crowd jumped below him to the music.
The strength of Toliver’s sound is the diversity. It was even more apparent this time. Flourishes of drum ‘n’ bass, rock and R&B anchored several songs.
Just 20 minutes before the shutdown, Houston City Council Member Edward Pollard and rapper Bun B presented Toliver with a proclamation recognizing Aug. 11 as Don Toliver Day.
“This is our own right here,” Pollard said to the cheering crowd.
Toliver was genuinely surprised by the presentation.
Houston, we have a problem. I always wanted this,” Toliver said. “I don’t even know what to say right now.”
