Port of Corpus Christi CEO says record year, potential container terminal could fuel more growth

Kent Britton says the port is discussing plans with a container terminal operator that could also affect future development in Robstown.

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — The Port of Corpus Christi is coming off a record-setting first seven months of the year as leaders look toward new projects that could bring additional economic development to the Coastal Bend.

Port CEO Kent Britton shared an update Wednesday while speaking to the Flour Bluff Business Association, highlighting the port’s performance so far this year and what could be coming next.

Britton said the port’s traditional business has experienced a record year. He also pointed to ongoing discussions with a container terminal operator as one of the biggest opportunities on the horizon.

The Port of Corpus Christi announced earlier this year that it had entered exclusive discussions with a container terminal operator.

Britton said those discussions could eventually affect how docks are designed in the Inner Harbor and potentially lead to a rail yard in Robstown.

“There’s a lot of stuff coming up on the horizon,” Britton said. “It’s gonna be an exciting next five years for the Port of Corpus Christi.”

Britton said he wants communities across the Coastal Bend to understand the port’s role in the regional economy and the opportunities that could come with its continued growth.

“There is still a lot of economic opportunity in Corpus Christi,” Britton said. “This is a place that is continuing to grow.”

Britton also highlighted the port’s relationships in Flour Bluff, including with the Corpus Christi Army Depot, Naval Air Station Corpus Christi and Flour Bluff ISD.
