The Dallas Zoo announced the death of the beloved 23-year-old gorilla Zola in a social media post Friday afternoon.
Zola, a male western lowland gorilla, was put down on Wednesday after exhibiting symptoms of lethargy, reduced appetite and discomfort, according to the post.
He received fluids, antibiotics and a full series of diagnostics, including imaging and lab work, the post said.
Zola underwent additional procedures on Wednesday but was unable to breathe on his own afterwards, the post said. Veterinary and animal care teams made the decision to “let him go peacefully.”

A full necropsy, an animal autopsy, is underway in an attempt to understand what led to Zola’s decline, the post said.
“Zola was a beloved member of our bachelor troop and was known for his playful personality and big heart,” the post said. “He loved showing off his breakdancing moves, spinning and splashing in water, a talent that made him a true internet star.”
The news comes as the Zoo was preparing the male gorillas to be moved to the San Antonio Zoo, the post said.
The “bachelor’s trip” is temporarily on hold while the Zoo grieves Zola’s loss. The other male gorillas are being closely monitored and supported, the post said.
“Zola will be deeply missed by many,” the post said. “We ask you to keep our animal care staff in your thoughts as they navigate this difficult loss.”
