More than 10 years ago, there were several healthcare access gaps in primary care, dental care and mental health services in San Antonio and the surrounding region.
To help meet the community’s needs, the Emergency Medicine Residency Program was launched in 2013 in the Joe R. and Teresa Lozano Long School of Medicine, now part of UT San Antonio.
The program was built to serve as a training program in South Texas, establishing a workforce pipeline throughout the region. Since its launch, the residency has addressed both physician shortages and growing demand for emergency care.
“From the start, even as a new program, it became automatically entrenched in the community, and the needs were served on day one and have been served since then,” said Christopher Gelabert, MD, director of the Emergency Medicine Residency Program at the Joe R. and Teresa Lozano Long School of Medicine and associate director of UT Health San Antonio’s Ultrasound Division.
