Fort Worth police said late Thursday that a man has been arrested in connection with an early morning suspected road rage shooting in which an Everman ISD employee was killed.
In a social media post, officials said the 37-year-old suspect is facing a murder charge in the death of LaTaivia Davis, who was fatally shot while she was driving in the eastbound lanes of Interstate 20 around 6:30 a.m. The incident led to an hourslong closure of the busy interstate as the morning rush hour commute was shifting into high gear.
The I-20 lanes reopened in the afternoon following an investigation by Fort Worth police, who have said the attack was an “apparent” road rage shooting.
According to an earlier statement from Fort Worth police spokeswoman Cynthia Wood, officers were dispatched to the 3700 block of I-20 about 6:30 a.m. after reports of a shooting.
Once there, police found Davis inside her vehicle and suffering from a gunshot wound. Witnesses told police the woman and the suspect had been traveling eastbound when the suspect pulled up and fired shots at her before fleeing the scene, Wood said.
Responders attempted life-saving measures, but Davis died at the scene, Wood said.
In a Thursday statement, Everman ISD spokeswoman Nikita Russell confirmed the victim had been an employee with the district.
“Our thoughts and heartfelt condolences are with the employee’s family, loved ones, colleagues, students and all those impacted by this loss,” Russell said.
Counseling and support resources will be available for those who need them, Russell said, and the district won’t be releasing any further information at this time.
Texas Department of Transportation traffic cameras showed free-moving traffic on both sides of the roadway shortly after 1 p.m. The investigation closed parts of I-20 for about six hours.
