Lake Travis High School senior Odin Hensley has died from complications related to a medical emergency he suffered during football practice earlier this week, the district said Thursday.
Superintendent Curtis Null announced Hensley’s death in a letter to families, calling it a “profound sadness” for the Lake Travis Independent School District community. The letter did not specify the exact cause of death. A district spokesperson confirmed that Hensley died overnight.
According to the football program, Hensley suffered a “serious health emergency” at a practice early Monday morning. Travis County STAR Flight airlifted him to Dell Children’s Medical Center.
The team canceled the remainder of Monday’s practice as a precaution after the emergency.
A prayer vigil was held for Hensley at Lake Hills Church Wednesday evening. Organizers moved it off the high school campus because of the size of the response.
In his letter, Null said Hensley had been part of the Lake Travis ISD community since attending Lake Pointe Elementary School and went on to become a two-sport athlete at the high school, competing in wrestling and football. Teachers and coaches described him as kind and determined, and said he was a valued teammate, classmate and friend.
“His presence touched many lives, and he will be deeply missed,” Null said.
The district said counselors would be available in the high school’s counseling center to support students, staff and families, with additional counselors on standby as needed.
Null asked the community to keep Hensley’s family, teammates, classmates, coaches, athletic trainers and teachers in their thoughts, and encouraged anyone wishing to help to monitor social media for updates from the family and those coordinating support efforts.
