SAN ANTONIO, Texas (KABB) — A Texas woman and her dog were killed after being struck by a vehicle while crossing a busy San Antonio roadway.
The accident happened just after 11:30 a.m. Friday off Marbach Road near Military Drive.
Police said the 52-year-old woman was crossing the roadway with her dog when a man in his 60s driving a Chrysler struck them. Investigators believe the woman may have entered the road from a nearby driveway or parking lot. There does not appear to be a crosswalk where she was crossing.
The woman was taken to the hospital with serious injuries, where she was later pronounced deceased.
Her dog was also badly injured. Police said an officer had to put the animal down because of the severity of its injuries.
The driver remained at the scene and was not injured. Police said he appeared to have some mobility and health issues.
The investigation briefly took another turn when a witness told an arriving officer that the driver might have a gun after seeing him reach underneath something inside the vehicle.
Police later determined there was no gun.
“It was just a passerby who thought they might have a gun,” an officer at the scene said. “No gun, no gun involved.”
Police said the driver was not facing charge at this time pending the results of the investigation.
Investigators were also working to obtain surveillance video from nearby businesses and had spoken with at least two witnesses who police said saw the crash.
Police said the woman had apparently been visiting a family member or friend in the area before the crash.
