A man who admitted to robbing a Forest Hill father who was fatally shot in his own home in 2023 will spend 48 years in prison, Tarrant County prosecutors said.
Artis Womack, 21, pleaded guilty to murder in the killing of 45-year-old Corey Wallace Sr. during a gambling night at Wallace’s home in August 2023, the district attorney’s office said in a social media post on Thursday.
Womack and two others, Labertrand Bell and Darieon Williams, were accused of participating in the robbery and murder, the Star-Telegram previously reported. Wallace had previously met Bell and Womack, but was not familiar with Williams, witnesses told police.
One of the three suspects was first to pull out a firearm, according to a relative of Wallace’s who was present at the time. Wallace, who was also armed, pulled out his gun to defend the relative and was shot in the back by Bell, the relative said.
Bell was later arrested for his role in Wallace’s death and in the deaths of two other men weeks earlier in Fort Worth, the Star-Telegram previously reported. Bell received two life sentences as part of a plea agreement in January.
Williams is scheduled for trial on a capital murder charge in October, according to Tarrant County district court records.
Wallace, a mechanic for Mercedes-Benz, was described by his family as a hardworking, universally loved man.
“He just enjoyed his family, enjoyed the ones that loved him,” said Dedrick Evans, Wallace’s grandson. “Even if somebody did something bad to him, he still never had a negative word to say about them or to them.”
