LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD) – Crews battled a wildfire in Floyd and Cottle counties, northeast of Lubbock, Friday. Additional fires were reported farther north across the Texas Panhandle.
According to the Texas A&M Forest Service, the Cedar Hill fire was 95 percent contained as of late Friday. Its size was estimated at 321 acres.

The fire burned near the community of Cedar Hill, along FM 97 in northeast Floyd County.
Grass Burr Fire
Farther east, the Grass Burr fire started Thursday. Friday it was 100 percent contained, estimated size 2,622 acres.

The Forest Service shared video of an airtanker dropping fire retardant on this fire Thursday.
Most of the Lubbock and South Plains area is in some level of drought. The latest U.S. Drought Monitor report released Thursday shows the status as of Tuesday morning.
The worst drought conditions are over parts of the Rolling Plains up to the Texas Panhandle, shown in red below.
