An Everman ISD teacher’s assistant was fatally shot in an apparent road rage incident that closed parts of Interstate 20 in southwest Fort Worth early Thursday.
Fort Worth police announced Thursday night that they have arrested a suspect, 37-year-old Patrick Lawrence, who faces a murder charge in the shooting death of LaTaivia Davis.
The shooting occurred about 6:30 a.m. near the 3700 block of I-20. Officers were dispatched to the scene and found a woman with a gunshot wound, police spokesperson Officer Cynthia Wood said at a news conference Thursday.
According to Wood, witnesses reported that the suspect and the victim got involved in “an apparent road rage situation.” The suspect pulled up to the woman’s car and fired some shots. Davis was hit and died at the scene.
The suspect left the area after the shooting, Wood said. Police later said that Lawrence was taken into custody through the coordinated efforts of the department’s patrol officers, Homicide Unit, Real Time Crime Center, Operation and Surveillance Team, recruit class and Directed Response Unit.
The victim was apparently on her way to work at Everman ISD at the time of the shooting. The Everman school district’s website lists Davis as an art aide at E. Ray Elementary School.

In a statement, the school district said, “Everman ISD is deeply saddened by the passing of a valued member of our staff. Our thoughts and heartfelt condolences are with the employee’s family, loved ones, colleagues, students, and all those impacted by this loss.
“The loss of a member of our Everman ISD family is felt throughout our entire school community. We are committed to supporting our students and staff during this difficult time, and counseling and support resources are being made available to those who may need them.
“Out of respect for the family and their privacy, the district will not release additional details at this time,” school officials said. “We ask that our community join us in extending compassion, support, and respect to the family and our school community as they grieve.”

The eastbound lanes of I-20 were closed at Trail Lake Drive for several hours, but have since reopened, the Texas Department of Transportation said in an updated post on X about 12:40 p.m.

Around 25 police units were dispatched to the area starting about 6:40 a.m.
A 911 caller reported that a woman in a red car was shot by the driver of another car, according to the 911 call sheet.
