The Texas Department of Transportation’s Austin District confirmed both the northbound and southbound State Highway 71 to I-35 flyovers in South Austin will be closed part of this weekend and next week during the overnight hours for striping and column work.

State Highway 71 to northbound I-35’s flyover will be closed Sunday, August 16 and Monday, August 17 from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. to strip the roadway. Meanwhile, State Highway 71 to southbound I-35’s flyover is earmarked for closures Tuesday, August 18 through Thursday, August 20 from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. to do column work on the elevated managed columns being built.

As a result, TxDOT has outlined the following detours for motorists:

Other closures include both the northbound and southbound I-35 main lanes being reduced to one lane in areas between Oltorf Street and State Highway 45 Southeast on Sunday, August 16 through Thursday, August 20. Those closures will begin at or around 8 p.m. and reopen at or before 6 a.m.

The interstate TLC is baked into TxDOT’s MyMobility35 program, a series of projects aimed at expanding and reconstructing the interstate in Texas’ capital city. The northbound flyover closure is for work on the I-35 Capital Express Central project, an estimated $4.5 billion, near-decade-long overhaul of eight miles of interstate near downtown Austin. Meanwhile, the southbound flyover closure is due to the I-35 Capital Express South project, a reconstruction effort expected to run through late 2028.
