If it wasn’t obvious already, Matthew McConaughey is “Choosin’ Texas.”
The Uvalde native and Austin local sang a bluegrass rendition of Ella Langley’s smash hit on Aug. 12’s edition of “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon.” McConaughey is well-known for his Texas pride, which was reciprocated by Alamo Drafthouse earlier this week when the theater chain renamed an Austin location after him.
McConaughey’s performance came during an audience suggestion segment, where Fallon pulled out a “fan-written” note asking if the actor could sing a bluegrass cover of “Choosin’ Texas.”

Sure enough, the curtains part and McConaughey is standing there with a mandolin ready to sing with indie folk band The Last Bison. Fallon soon joined in playing the washboard.

Matthew McConaughey sings ‘Choosin’ Texas’
McConaughey was already slated to be on the “Tonight Show” to promote his new film “The Rivals of Amziah King.”
The film follows a beekeeper and musician that reunites with his former foster daughter and fends off threats to his honey business. “Amziah King” had its world premiere at the 2025 South by Southwest Festival and releases in theaters on Friday, Aug. 14.
McConaughey’s “Choosin’ Texas” rendition comes the same week Langley is scheduled to perform at Fort Worth’s Dickies Arena on Saturday, Aug. 15.
Langley actually filmed the music video for the tune in Fort Worth at Stagecoach Ballroom (at 2516 E. Belknap St.).
“The video captures the spirit of Texas through the lens of Fort Worth’s legendary Western heritage and live music scene,” Visit Fort Worth said in a news release at the time. “The project spotlights Fort Worth as the ultimate Western destination.”
